Our SnowShowing weekends are based here in Leysin in the Swiss Alps at the Chalet L’Epicea Bed and Breakfast. Leysin is an ideal base for snowshoeing, we’ve great transport links from Geneva with the mainline rail taking you to Aigle where you board a traditional mountain railway right into the heart of the village. The Alpes Vaudoise are our back garden and we’ve dozens of snowshoe routes right from our door and others just a short car or bus ride away.
This is a great chance to try a new activity, no previous experience is required. You need to be able to walk for a couple of hours but that’s not without stopping!
Led by a UIMLA International Mountain Leader to help you explore the mountains off the beaten track and guide you safely in the winter environment. Snowshoes and avalanche safety gear provided with training.
Leysin is medium size village with a large variety of restaurants and bars to relay after a day out in the mountains. Plus, one evening per week we invite you to snowshoe by moonlight to a local mountain restaurant where we will enjoy a fondue (other dishes available).
Transport. We’re connected to the Swiss rail network by a mountain railway running from the valley town of Aigle, from Geneva airport it’s 2 hours right into the centre of Leysin. If you prefer to drive we’ve car parking (outside) and the road system is good, roads from the valley to the village are cleared and if you can’t make the last few hundred metres in the village we can come and fetch you in our 4WD.
Evening Meals. Here in Leysin we have a large variety of restaurants and a range of cuisines to try, at the last count we think there’s around 30 different restaurants. For example, for traditional cheese dishes like fondue we recommend the renowned Fromagerie. For great pasta and pizza we have the Lorraine. Or for something different the Chinese restaurant “Han Lung des Alpes” with a range of set meals and a la carte options. There’s the traditional wooden chalet restaurant Le Leysin in old village of Leysin dating back to 1771 and serving classic and seasonal dishes. On the edge of the village, high above the valley, we have the Chalet-restaurant Prafandaz serving traditional Swiss dishes in a rustic chalet. At the Hotel Mercure you can try a three course meal of local ingredients in a French style for only 30.- CHF per person, the menu changes every night and always offers excellent value. Finally, if you’re too tired from the day and want a quiet night, we have a small kitchenette here in Chalet L’Epicea Bed and Breakfast where you can prepare simple dishes to eat in our dining room.
